They were able to preserve the injured dolphin’s life with the assistance of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who created a special prosthetic tail for her. However, their battle is far from over. The extremely old dolphin Panama, Winter’s surrogate mother, has died, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, Winter may suffer even more from Panama’s passing because USDA laws state that dolphins must be housed in pairs due to their social tendencies.
